St. Mary's Mail Server Information

The following information is provided to help St. Mary's employees access their e-mail via webmail, via their own devices (smartphone, etc.), or via an external account (Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.). Except for the school webmail, the IT Department does not provide support apart from the following information.

Mail Limitations

The following limitations apply to St. Mary's e-mail accounts:

  • Maximum size for a single message: 20MB
  • Maximum mailbox size: 2GB

Outlook Web App (webmail)

Outlook Web App provides much of the functionality of the regular Outlook mail client, and is the preferred method for accessing your St. Mary's mail account outside of the school. OWA provides access to mail, contacts, tasks and calendar.

Address: https://mail.smis.ac.jp/owa

Get St. Mary's e-mail on your smartphone, iPad, etc.

You'll need your St. Mary's e-mail address, user name and password. You may need the name of the mail server: mail04.smis.ac.jp

For iOS devices (iPhones, iPads)

  • Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > Exchange

For Android devices

Exchange/ActiveSync

You will need the following information:

  • Server: mail04.smis.ac.jp
  • Domain: smis
  • Use a secure (SSL) connection
  • Authentication is required for sending. Use the same user name/password as for receiving.
  • If you encounter a certificate warning, set your account to accept all certificates.

POP3

Make sure to set your POP3 account to leave all mail on the server. You will need the following information:

  • POP Server: pop.smis.ac.jp
Use a secure (SSL) connection (port 995)
  • SMTP Server: mail.smis.ac.jp
Use a secure (TLS) connection on port 25
  • Authentication is required for sending. Use the same user name/password as for receiving.
  • If you encounter a certificate warning, set your account to accept all certificates.

IMAP

You will need the following information:

  • IMAP Server: imap.smis.ac.jp
Use a secure (SSL) connection (port 993)
  • SMTP Server: mail.smis.ac.jp
Use a secure (TLS) connection on port 25
  • Authentication is required for sending. Use the same user name/password as for receiving.
  • If you encounter a certificate warning, set your account to accept all certificates.

A note about sending as your St. Mary's account via an external provider

Some external providers allow you to “send as” your St. Mary's account. If the provider allows you to specify the St. Mary's SMTP server to send (see above for details), then this could be satisfactory.

On the other hand, if the external provider merely spoofs the St. Mary's e-mail as the sending address (“forged sender”), then any message sent this way is likely to be treated as spam.
